Hydram Sheet Metalwork supplies metal components and fabrications to companies in the aerospace, bus and coach industries, and has been working with rail trackside equipment (location cases/cabinets, LOCs) and rolling stock manufacturers since 2012. As a leading sheet metal rail industry fabricator, Hydram has the experience, expertise and capacity to handle significant contracts direct from tier 1 manufacturers. Hydram supplies metalwork for rolling stock, both for train car interiors and exterior subassemblies.

Supplying precision sheet metal fabrications to the rail industry

In 2016, Hydram was selected by Hitachi Rail Europe to supply metal fabrications for the Intercity Express Programme. Along side this project Hydram secured further work from Hitachi including the Scotrail Franchise project. In total, Hydram supplied more than 1,000 diﬀerent parts and assemblies to Hitachi Europe and Italy.

Supplying the Intercity Express Programme (IEP)

For IEP, Hitachi Rail Europe was contracted to build 866 carriages for the UK Class 800/801 trains for the Great Western and East Coast main lines. The majority of components supplied by Hydram for the IEP are for the carriage interiors, including hand poles, painted interior panels and various bracketry and exterior under-floor assemblies – quality products, many supplied to a class ‘A’ surface finish.

Hydram and Hitachi Collaboration

Hitachi Rail’s success with the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) helped to create a supply chain of over 1,400 suppliers, including over 130 suppliers directly in the North East.

Hydram Engineering worked with Hitachi Rail winning a contract to supply over 1,500 components and assemblies.

Adhesive Bonding – Rail Industry

Hydram holds EN 17460 / DIN 6701 accreditation for the use of adhesive bonding in the manufacture of rail vehicles and parts of rail vehicles.

EN 17460 (formerly DIN 6701) comprises a comprehensive set of rules for quality assurance in the field of bonding and adhesives use in the rail vehicle industry.

Companies have to demonstrate safe use of the full potential of adhesive bonding technology, holding officially recognised qualifcations in adhesive bonding, a suitable quality management system, documentation for key bonded joints, suitable workplaces and many others.

Coded Welding for the Rail Industry

Hydram is amongst only a limited number of UK companies certified to BS EN 15085-2 Class 1 – the Certification for Welding of Railway Vehicles and Components (CWRVC). Hydram’s coded welders, procedures and techniques are regularly assessed by a third party accreditation body to assure customers that the necessary welding quality management processes are in place to consistently produce high quality welded products. This is particularly important in guaranteeing welding quality in the production of railway vehicles and components.
