Hydram Apprenticeships

Developing the Next Generation of Skilled Engineers

Hydram provides high-quality Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships in Metal Fabrication and Lean Manufacturing, delivered through a combination of structured on-the-job training and academic support from East Durham College.

Our apprentices gain practical experience from day one, working within a modern manufacturing environment and developing the skills required for long-term careers in engineering.

Programme Structure

On-the-Job Training at Hydram

Apprentices work alongside experienced engineers across key areas of the business, developing competence in:

  • Fabrication and welding
  • Lasaer cutting, CNC machinery and sheet metal processes
  • Production operations and workflow
  • Quality inspection and documentation
  • Safe working practices

Departmental rotations ensure apprentices gain a broad understanding of Hydram’s operations and the wider engineering industry.

Technical Training with East Durham College

All classroom-based learning is delivered by East Durham College, where apprentices work towards nationally recognised engineering qualifications.

Regular progress reviews are conducted jointly by Hydram and EDC to ensure each apprentice receives appropriate support and guidance.

Apprenticeship Pathways

Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship (Level 3)

This pathway develops the skills required to produce high-quality fabricated and welded components.

Key learning areas include:

  • Welding and fabrication techniques
  • Interpreting engineering drawings
  • Use of fabrication machinery and hand tools
  • Quality assurance and inspection

Progression opportunities: Fabricator, Welder, Skilled Operator, Technician.

Lean Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeship (Level 2)

This pathway provides an introduction to manufacturing operations and continuous improvement principles.

Key learning areas include:

  • Lean manufacturing techniques
  • Production processes and workflow
  • Problem-solving and waste reduction
  • Quality control and documentation

Progression opportunities: Production Operative, Quality Support, or progression to Level 3 programmes.

Apprentice-Led Projects

Each year, apprentices undertake practical fabrication projects that develop teamwork, planning and technical capability. These projects often result in functional items used across the business, such as:

  • Stillages and storage solutions
  • Custom cupboards, fixtures and workbenches
  • Decorative and functional sculptures

Locomotion No.1 Project

In 2025, Hydram apprentices designed and fabricated a half-sized, stylised replica of Locomotion No.1 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

The completed piece is now a permanent exhibit at Hopetown, Darlington, demonstrating the high standard of work produced by our apprentices.

Annual Residential Programme

Apprentices take part in a 3–4 day annual residential trip to either the Lake District or Northumberland, designed to build teamwork, communication and personal resilience.

Typical activities include:

  • Hiking
  • Canoeing
  • Gorge walking
  • Caving
  • Mine exploration

These residentials give apprentices the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop confidence and strengthen relationships within the group.
