DIN 6701 / EN 17460

In December 2018 Hydram became certified to the DIN 6701 standard (Class 2A), the accreditation for the use of adhesive bonding in the manufacture of rail vehicles and parts of rail vehicles.

DIN 6701 will be superseded by EN 17460 in 2025 and Hydram was certified to this new standard in April 2024.

What Is EN 17460?

For the manufacturing process of adhesive bonding, it is desirable to have rules for the use of the technology, that when correctly implemented, ensure the quality of the components joined together in this way.  This applies to the complete cycle from design through to production and repair, and the standard applies specifically to adhesive quality assurance in rail vehicle construction.  Requirements to comply with the standard include demonstrating proof of officially recognised qualifcations in adhesive bonding, a suitable quality management system, documentation for key bonded joints, suitable workplaces and many others.

Evolution From DIN 6701

The DIN 6701 “Adhesive bonding of rail vehicles and vehicle parts” series of standards was published in 2015, with the superseding standard EN 17460 “Railway applications – Adhesive bonding of railroad vehicles and their components”, published in October 2022.  The coexistence phase of both sets of standards will run until September 2025, when the DIN 6701 series of standards will be withdrawn.

EN 17460 Accredited Bonded Metal Products

Sheet metal fabrications supplier Hydram works for a number of industries, including the rail vehicle sector, where Adhesive Bonding standard EN 17460 specifically applies.  Adhesive bonding is also used in other industries and the technical requirements that the standard mandates will benefit and ensure the bonded quality for all products.  The training levels, controlled environments for stock holding, the equipment, and the dedicated segregated areas used by Hydram’s adhesive bonding specialists are applicable in other industries that require metal products using adhesive bonding techniques.
