Working for a range of customers and business sectors, the benefits of working with an ISO 9001 certified sheet metal supplier have been seen by our customers for nearly 30 years, first gaining quality assurance certification in 1996. From earth-moving vehicles to HVAC components, Hydram’s customers can be assured that they are working with a responsible, professional, experienced, supply chain partner. Here, you can find out more about the background to Hydram’s engagement with Quality Management Systems and ISO 9001 quality assurance in particular.
In order to continually meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, sheet metal fabricator Hydram operates fully documented Quality Procedures and a Quality Manual. To support these, the company employs a dedicated Quality Team consisting of a Quality Manager, two Quality Engineers and five Quality Technicians, assisted by Project Engineers as required. Hydram supplies quality assured metal fabrications to industry throughout the UK and Europe.
ISO 9001 is part of a set of five quality management systems (QMS) standards created by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) to help businesses ensure that they meet customer needs within statutory and regulatory requirements relating to a product or service. ISO 9001 specifically deals with the with the requirements that the organisation must fulfil.
Third-party certification bodies confirm that businesses meet the requirements of ISO 9001 through a rigorous surveillance audit process and in Hydram Engineering’s case the third party is SGS UK Ltd.
Historically, the ISO 9000 standards were based on the same structure as the BS 5750 quality assurance model. As a growing sheet metal subcontractor, Hydram began its certification engagement in 1994, and the process of creating a Hydram QMS began, based on BS 5750.
During Hydram’s implementation, it became apparent that the BS 5750 standard would be superseded, and so with the focus now on ISO, Hydram was successful on its first attempt and achieved ISO 9002:1987 in May 1996.
In May 2002, Hydram achieved the latest standard ISO 9001:2000, the successor to the previous ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 versions. With the ISO standard constantly evolving, Hydram kept pace and achieved the ISO 9001:2008 version in 2009, and achieved ISO 9001:2015 in 2017. The evolution of the standard followed a theme of simplification, and also, standardisation against other ISO standards that were not related to quality, such as ISO 14001.
ISO 9001 is seen as a prerequisite for sheet metal fabrication companies working with industrial customers on a subcontract basis. The creation of a Quality Management System that conforms to international standards benefits both the business and its customers. It signifies that quality is taken seriously and that the business is a reliable partner, tracking customer satisfaction and responding to any issues raised.
