Here, you can find out more about the background to Hydram’s achievement of BS EN 15085-2 and EN 15085-2.
Hydram is certified to BS EN 15085-2 Class 1, the top level of certification for Welding of Railway Vehicles for components with the highest safety relevance, and is amongst a limited number of class 1 certified companies in the UK. Hydram achieved BS EN 15085-2 Class 2 in June 2017, BS EN 15085-2 Class 1 in August 2018 and achieved the European standard in July 2024.
BS EN 15085-2 CL 1 CWRVC and EN 15085-2 CL1 ECWRV demonstrate a manufacturer’s competence for control of welding quality in production of railway vehicles and components.
British and Euronorm Standard, BS EN 15085-2, also refered to as Certification for Welding of Railway Vehicles and Components (CWRVC), is rapidly becoming a pre-requisite for contract award, or approved supplier status in the UK rail industry. The BS EN 15085-2 certification shows that the welded parts, welding supervisors and inspectors, welders and welding operators meet the specified requirements of the international standard. The CWRVC scheme demonstrates a manufacturer’s competence for control of welding quality in the production of railway vehicles and components.
Euronorm Standard, EN 15085-2, also refered to as European Committee for Welding of Railway Vehicles (ECWRV), is rapidly becoming a pre-requisite for contract award, or approved supplier status across the European rail industry.
Third party certification, ensured by specialist assessors, in compliance with EN 15085: Railway Applications – Welding of Railway Vehicles and Components, is increasing being required for manufacturers of components, sub-assemblies and vehicles working in the rail industry in Europe.
According to the BS EN 15085-2 standard, the quality requirements of the manufacturers producing the welded railway vehicles, their components or sub-assemblies have to be determined according to the ISO 3834 standards. Therefore, certification to BS EN 15085 must be together with ISO 3834.
To qualify for ISO 3834, companies must demonstrate that they have processes in place for welding procedure specifications, welder qualification, material control, inspection and testing, meeting best practice principles. By qualifying, suppliers provide assurance to customers that they have the necessary welding quality management processes in place to consistently produce high quality welded products. It also demonstrates a supplier’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
